Train types in Germany

Intercity-Express (ICE)

In 1991 German Railways introduced its first high speed train: the Intercity-Express (ICE). At the time ICE 1 was a technical revolution. Today there are 5 different models: ICE 1, 2, 3, T and ICE Sprinter. Reaching up to 300 km/h ICE 3 is DB Bahn’s fastest high speed train. Not only the short travel times but also the convenience of these ICE trains is sure to win you over. Each Intercity-Express is fully air-conditioned and maintains a stylish interior with a relaxing atmosphere for a quick and comfortable journey throughout Germany and to adjoining countries.

All Intercity-Express (ICE) trains guarantee a wide range of services and plentiful leg room for a comfortable journey to your destination. Regardless of where you book your ticket, online or at a ticket counter, you can request an aisle or window seat, row seating or face-to-face-seating, or a seat with a fixed table if you prefer. Quiet zones are also available. All ICE high speed trains are designed to be user and family-friendly, offering changing stations for families with young children. For the disabled special facilities on the trains and at the stations are provided.

On every Intercity-Express (ICE) train there is a Bordbistro and/or Bordrestaurant offering a great variety of meals and drinks. Sip a freshly tapped beer or enjoy a gourmet platter of French cheeses while travelling to your destination. Depending on the time of the day, you can choose from various breakfast menus or from à la carte main dishes. Additionally, the menu often features German and European regional specialities. DB also recognizes how important it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, therefore DB Bahn Bordrestaurant cars offer a selection of organic products, marked in the menus on board. The Bordbistro serves snacks and a variety of beverages which you can consume there or take back to your seat. As a 1st class passenger you have the option to request a selection of beverages and meals from our menus to be served at your seat. Snacks and beverages are also available at your seat in 2nd class from a mobile trolley.

Intercity/Eurocity (IC/EC)

Faster than regional trains, IC and EC trains connect major cities, reaching speeds of 200 km/h. Both Intercity and Eurocity trains run frequently, either every hour or two hours depending on the destination. Intercity trains run exclusively in Germany, while Eurocity trains reach neighbouring European countries. Both trains are very comfortable and offer many amenities that are sure to satisfy.

Food service on board

Almost all Intercity or Eurocity trains have a Bordrestaurant and/or a Bordbistro. The Intercity trains of DB Bahn have been recently updated to include electric outlets at table seats of the center aisle in coaches of both classes. Eurocity trains consist partly of wagons from neighbouring train companies and may vary in terms of equipment.

Regional and urban trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn)

DB Bahn offers new and improved regional trains, boasting comfortable seats, spacious multi-purpose compartments and entry at platform level, all to make your travels more enjoyable.

Departure at regular intervals with easy-to-remember departure times makes travelling short distances or transferring to long-distance trains more pleasant.

Regional-Express (RE)

The Regional-Express connects cities and offers travel in comfortable modern trains. It leaves at regular intervals and links local to long-distance trains.

Regionalbahn (RB)

The Regionalbahn offers a basic service from all local stations. It provides the connection between the regions and city centres. It also connects to the Regional-Express.

S-Bahn

The S-Bahn services high-density areas, leaving in quick, regular intervals. Some S-Bahn stations have access to longer distance regional trains, making travel within the city and between cities a breeze.

Thank you all! (02-12-2025)

"The team of people working in the Polrail Service Customer Service office are absolutely fantastic. They helped me through every step of what would have otherwise been a bit problematic for me, considering connection times between airport arrivals and train departures and subsequent connections.
They have my sincere gratitude, and highest praise.
